Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia: The Russian Church, which has several dioceses, hundreds of parishes and millions of believers on the territory of the European Union, is taking an active part in the creation of the new face of our continent. It is the task of our Church to remind Europe of its Christian roots, to resist the attack of aggressive secularism, and to defend traditional values. An active role in the realization of this noble task is fulfilled by the Representation of the Moscow Patriarchate to the European Institutions. May 17, 2008

About our Representation

En français

The Representation of the Russian Orthodox Church to the European Institutions in Brussels was created by the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church on 17 July 2002.

The Representation is currently headed by the Right Reverend Dr Hilarion Alfeyev, Bishop of Vienna and Austria. Formerly Secretary for Inter-Christian Affairs of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate, he was appointed head of this Representation by the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church on 17 July 2002.

The secretary of the Representation is Priest Anthony Ilyin, member of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate and priest at St Nicholas Cathedral in Brussels. He was appointed to his present position by the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church on 7 October 2002.

The Representation is helped by Hieromonk Alexander Siniakov, currently a doctoral student at the University of Louvain and a lecturer at the University of Paris (Sorbonne).

Dmitriy Ageev, a graduate of St Tikhon’s Theological Institute in Moscow, is also working for the Representation.

The web site of the Representation is maintained by Denis Volovik, a webmaster working in Hungary.

For information about the main tasks of the Representation, as well as about its immediate plans and prospects, see: ‘Why Does the Russian Orthodox Church Need a Representation in Brussels?
